At many places in Brazil, rabies is not a threat anymore. The city
of São Paulo, for example, hasn't registered any cases of the
disease in 24 years. This so-called victory - together with a more
consistent pressure by humane societies - has eased the way for society
and authorities alike for a new perspective on the relationship between
men and companion animals.
Catch-and-kill procedures of abandoned cats and dogs are increasingly
being replaced by preventive polices which include more comprehensive
legislation and the emphasis on Responsible Pet Ownership. It´s consensus
that preventing unplanned pregnancies through spaying and neutering
is key to reach a healthy and rewarding man-animal relationship. This
is where come in those in whose hands and skills lays the solution
to the pet overpopulation equation: the clinical veterinarian.
The pet overpopulation is ever present in both small and large cities. It reveals itself daily to veterinarians as puppies in cardboard boxes, run-over and wounded animals, zoonosis and several other instances of cruelty which can wear the professional out, creating a feeling of powerlessness.
In order to handle such reality, veterinarians must take on the role of social agents. The key to success is turning cats and dogs into pets, true family members who are part of our society and market. The veterinarian professional plays a central role in this process, contributing in a crucial way to build healthy, balanced relationships.
With that in mind, ARCA Brasil conceived the Veterinarian's Seminar - Social Responsibility & Animal Welfare, targeted at professionals and students. It will take place at the Hotel Transamerica's Convention Center, during the 4th ANCLIVEPA Congress, the country's most prestigious Small Animals Veterinary Association.
The event is divided in two pannels: Pet Population Control and Social Responsibility. Success stories, innovative techniques and the advantages (for veterinarians) of engaging in social projects will be covered throughout lectures and round-table and debate sessions. International speakers will bring experiences that will allow Brazilian society to a real history "short cut".
- Encourage debate and actions that promote the inclusion of domestic
animals in the market and society.
- Discuss the importance and benefits for veterinarians as far as
actions related to animal welfare are concerned.
- Promote professional growth of veterinarians out of their attitudes
toward domestic animals, owners and society.
The ARCA Brasil Seminar is a must-go for veterinarians
who, following the example of professionals from developed countries,
are increasingly aware of their social role and interacting
with opportunities related to animal welfare.
